After Root asks him about the Machine's location, Szilard is killed by Hersh's team before he can tell her. It seemed he shared Root's belief that the Machine should be free.

Lawrence Szilard may have been named for Leó Szilárd, an Austro-Hungarian nuclear physicist, who was a contemporary of Albert Einstein, Robert Oppenheimer and Edward Teller. Szilárd did early foundation research on the nuclear chain reaction and contributed to the development of the first atomic bomb. He wrote the Einstein-Szilárd letter to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, which Einstein signed, and led to the creation of the Manhattan Project and the first atomic bombs. He spent his later life advocating international arms control, and opposing the militarization of atomic energy use.
