Wernick is a former member of the East German intelligence agency, the Stasi.
He was part of a Stasi team, including Ulrich Kohl, Heinrich Hauffe and Steiler, that hunted down and neutralized East German defectors. He was their document forger.
After breaking out of prison, Kohl tracked him down and poisoned him as revenge for the apparent death of his wife. Reese was able to save his life in return for information on Kohl.
